Provenance:
from Southern German aristocratic ownership.
In 1659 Barbara Villiers became the wife of Roger Palmer, 1st Earl of Castlemaine, and in 1660 she also became the ‘maitresse en titre’ of the King of England, Scotland and Ireland, Charles II, who made her the first Duchess of Cleveland in 1670. This painting has been attributed to Sir Peter Lely.
